UPCOMING TRAINING

Training with Guy VAN LEEMPUT (B) – “Transparent bowls”

Guy Van Leemput (1967, Herentals, Belgium) is an internationally renowned ceramist and a passionate teacher.

TRAINING

This workshop is an introduction to the manufacture of very fine bowls, as well as an introduction to the manufacture of a retractable support used for firing. You will begin by familiarising yourself with the material and learning how to make very fine pieces. Guy Van Leemput will demonstrate a number of techniques for applying motifs and will give you the opportunity to practise. Each participant will start a bowl with one or more of the techniques demonstrated. We will also make the pivoting supports that will carry the piece into the kiln. Once this first bowl is complete, you will be invited to push your limits.

Day 1: Detailed explanation of the technical aspects: use of several types of clay, use of a ball, approach to the firing method to come.
Creation of a very fine bowl and learning of three simple decoration techniques.

Day 2: Making a second bowl using slower, more advanced techniques and a mini clay press. Explanation of how to draw a pattern and how to divide space (using some simple mathematics).

CONFERENCE with Charles Bottin (B) “The art of wood-fired ovens, from yesterday to today – an ecological and artistic challenge”

Charles Bottin will be sharing his technical knowledge and thoughts based on 45 years’ experience of fire and the construction of 25 wood-fired ovens.

Programme for Sunday 15 of Septembre:

9.30am-12.30pm
Introduction: Firing ceramics in a wood-fired kiln is a technical, artistic and human choice.
– It’s a technique rich in possibilities, efficient and ecological, but one that requires theoretical training, practice and personal experience to master.
– Knowing the possibilities of fire allows our gestures to harmonise with its action, and interacting with it becomes co-creation. Transmuting the elements in this natural way requires knowledge, vigilance and concentration, as our art adjusts to the fire.
– The experience of firing! What happens within us and between us in this intense, risky and powerful “out of time” experience, the sharing of a spirit?
Discussion and exchange.

Presentation with illustrations:
Background to the experiment.
Different wood-fired ovens, adapted to different situations and needs
Different fireplaces (types, dimensions, relationship to the chimney)
Design, construction, loading, firing (combustion, atmospheres, stages, ash, performance).
Questions and discussion with participants

Lunch break 12h30- 13h30

1.30 – 2.30 pm
Workshop work
Divide the participants into 4 sub-groups: discuss the choice of firing ceramics and pottery in a wood-fired kiln; share questions, thoughts and feelings on the subjects covered during the morning.
Mix of participants (experienced and beginners-aspirants)
Mediators: Séverine Lutz, Eva Kengen, Frédéric Mathieu and Pierre Daubit.

14:30-16:00
Plenary session: feedback from the sub-groups, discussions, questions and sharing.
Possible extension or not: discussion of a possible follow-up to the conference with a practical oven-building project and production of a tutorial.

Dates and times: Sunday 15 September 2024 from 9.30am to 4pm

Place: Andenne Cultural Centre, rue de la Papeterie, 2A, 5300 Andenne, Belgium.
Free and easy parking. 10 min walk from Andenne station.

PAST TRAINING

Training and demonstration with Terry DAVIES (UK/IT) – “The Elephant Skin technique

Terry Davies is a potter specialising in stoneware. His work strikes a delicate balance between the functional, the abstract and the classical.
His work is based on a technique he developed many years ago in the UK: ‘elephant skin’.

TRAINING

Programme: Over these two days, Terry Davies will take you step by step through his making process, showing you how to create shapes using only the inside. You will see that these pieces are pushed outwards during their manufacture, to crack the surface; they give the impression of a dry, burnt earth.

Day 1:
Practice with clay in motion, throwing with very little water (which is necessary for this manufacturing process), using cylinders as a base for sculptural forms.

Day 2:
Putting into practice all the exercises from the first day, and using different ways of making the surface move and break. Understand how to maintain this effect, and how to fire and colour.

There will be no firing, but students will understand the firing process.

Prerequisite:
This course is aimed at ceramists who already have a good command of throwing and are able to turn a good solid cylinder fairly quickly.
Have a basic knowledge of English

Participants must bring :
– 20 kg of their clay (the one they usually use for throwing) recycled and prepared for use. Recycled clay is often less compact and the surface is more textured.
– Their basic equipment,
– A notebook and an apron.

Dates and times: Workshop: Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 May 2024 from 9.30am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 4.30pm (Sold out)

Price: Course: 280 € (meal not included, no cooking)

TRAINING with Andréas GRAU (Fr) “Small parts moulding”.

Andréas Grau: Trained as an engineer, Andréas has been in charge of the technical side of “Ateliers Ulmer + Grau” for 20 years. He navigates between jewellery, ceramics and moulding. He puts his engineering skills at the service of creativity.

Objective:
This course is aimed at anyone who wants to learn the different moulding techniques, with a focus on small parts.
Small parts have a number of special features that will be studied and worked on during this three-day course. At the end you will have made moulds of 1 to 3 parts. You will know how to prepare quality plaster for casting moulds and stamping moulds.
During this course, we will concentrate on moulding small parts, often used for ceramic jewellery, but not only.
There will be a bit of theory, which is unavoidable if you want quality moulds, but will be diluted during the course to lighten the dry matter. You’ll make 4 moulds in total; we’ll start with an open mould and work our way up to a 3-part mould (with increasing and progressive difficulty).
We’ll finish the course with a casting session to experiment and understand how to use the moulds.

Contents :
– Drafts and undercuts
– Parting lines, seam lines
– Size and thickness of a mould
– Different ways of burying
– From a simple open mould to multi-part moulds
– Calculating and preparing plaster, plaster setting time
– Soaping
– Drying the mould
– Casting

Prerequisites :
No pre-requisites but a great desire to learn.

Dates and times: From Saturday 18 to Monday 20 May 2024 (Whitsun Weekend) – from 9.30am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 4.30pm (FULL)

Place: Andenne Cultural Centre, rue de la Papeterie, 2A, 5300 Andenne, Belgium.
Free and easy parking. 10 min walk from Andenne station.

Price: 380€ (Lunch not included. Plaster included.)

Please note:
The objects to be moulded are provided because they enable us to tackle the different problems of moulding and, above all, their solutions. Each object presents its own particular difficulties and the different solutions envisaged to overcome them.
The course does not include the moulding of personal items, but at the end of the course, participants should be able to mould their own items.

Participants should bring :
Basic equipment
A notebook and apron

Please note that places are limited to a maximum of 6 people (Sold out).

General conditions of participation

This course is fully booked.
You can register on the waiting list via the online form.

Training with Violaine ULMER (FR) “JUST RINGS / Bijou céramique” (Ceramic jewellery)

Violaine Ulmer is a visual artist who also creates jewellery and small porcelain objects, mostly one-off pieces.
Her approach is based on the idea that “ceramic jewellery” is a speciality in its own right within the wider field of contemporary ceramics.
Her work is essentially based on research into form and material. Her pieces can be highly architectural or, on the contrary, telluric.
She sees ceramic jewellery as a portable ceramic sculpture.

Aims of the course :

learn about the requirements and constraints of porcelain as a material for making rings
experiment with different techniques for making rings and assembling different parts.
learn different surface decoration techniques to personalise shapes
manage the glazing of small pieces, as well as the constraints and possibilities associated with the firing of rings
the ring will be seen as a “portable sculpture”, giving free rein to the creativity of each participant

Training with Thierry LUANG RATH

A potter and ceramist for 36 years, Thierry Luang Rath trained as a pottery wheel-turner and is self-taught in the treatment of his stoneware pieces.

For the last 16 years, his work has been based on the premise of neither adding, nor removing, nor tracing.
The motifs on the sides of the bowls are often geometric. Sometimes they can be read on several levels, and show the presence of each gesture (up to a few thousand passes with rudimentary tools), executed by eye and without any prior drawing. Extreme accuracy is required in reducing the motif to fit the shape of the bowl.

Programme:

Over two days, participants will learn the technique of repoussé clay on bowls previously turned by the instructor.
Each participant will have four bowls (350g in Treigny clay – MJ smooth) maintained at the ideal consistency.
Tools will be provided for these two days.
Several versions based on the same tools will be offered for each bowl.
No firing is planned.

TRAINING with Gabriele Tognoloni (IT) – “PIT FIRING – a journey of fire and colour”.

What is Pit Firing?

Pit firing is one of the oldest known methods of firing clay, and is still practised by certain African populations. The dry object is preheated next to a fire. It is then placed in a pit dug in the earth, bringing it into direct contact with the combustion materials.
Originally, this technique was used to produce crockery for holding liquids or food, and the result of the firing was reddish ceramics with more or less dark spots depending on the lack of oxygen in the fire (reduction).
Today, Pit Fire is a contemporary practice in which artistic research is combined with the essentiality of a primitive technique. It offers a range of suggestions, from informal research to the colours of cave paintings.

Programme for the day:

9.30am – 12pm
Preparation of the pieces brought by the participants.
Preparation of the hole in the ground and explanation of the essential points to be respected.
12h
Lighting and explanation of fire management.

TRAINING with Gabriele TOGNOLONI (IT) – The Bucchero – Black Ceramic, Etruscan clay

What is bucchero?

Bucchero is a type of fine and very light black ceramic produced by the Etruscans for making vases. The integral black monochrome is the most obvious characteristic of this type of ceramic and the colouring is obtained by means of a particular firing.

Programme

Day 1 – 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm
– Brief introduction with historical and artistic notes
– Working the pieces with sandpaper and burnishing with boxwood.

Workshop with Ana-Belén Montero : Ash glazes – FULL

Glazes made from ashes have been used by the ceramicists for thousands of years.

Probably initially appeared in China and used mainly, initially, in the Middle East, they are commonly studied and used by the artists nowadays.

Ashes are indeed an extremely interesting raw material for the ceramicists of the XXI century, eager to know the origin of the raw materials they use and their ecological footprint. In addition, combined with other basic raw materials, which are often few in number, ash makes it possible to produce a wide variety of glossy, satin and mat glazes.

“Translucent Bone China” with Sasha Wardell – FULL

Bone China is a paste that was developed in England in the XVIIIth century while Europeans were searching for the recipe of porcelain, kept secret by the Chinese for centuries. It is mainly used for slipcasting and, after firing, it offers magnificent qualities of resistance and translucency.

These characteristics have very much interested Sasha Wardell, an internationally renowned English ceramist, who has become one of Bone China’s specialists. She adapted the industrial molding and casting techniques of this Bone China “porcelain” to personal studio production.

In this three-day course, Sasha Wardell will teach about how to use the Bone China’s slip and some decorating techniques that characterize her work and highlight the whiteness and translucency of this paste. She will also show methods for casting multi-layered colored slips that combine color and translucency. All these techniques can be adapted to the work of casting porcelain for those who prefer to use porcelain instead of Bone China.

She has travelled and worked in many Eastern countries (Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, etc) as well as Western countries (Europe, Latin America, etc). She is an international reference in the world of contemporary ceramics because of her pedagogical experience and her constant research.

Encarna Soler is coming to Andenne for a three-days workshop about Shino glazes: shino, e-shino, shino nosei, gray shinos, yellow shinos, engobe Gozu, etc.

During the first two days, participants will learn about this family of glazes. They will make tests that will be placed on tiles or small bowls. The last day, the group will be able to analyze them after they have been fired in a gas kiln. They will discuss about their conclusions so everybody will learn from others experiences.
